I disagree with the other review. Quite frankly, I find Bootham to be an exceptional school and my only regret is that I didn't start my children there earlier.

Both of our boys are at the Junior School and this is the final year for the oldest. The school has been excellent, with a strongly experiential approach to learning. The focus is holistic rather than narrowly academic, recognising that building confidence, courage, resilience and curiosity are at least as important as any academic focus. There are also many opportunities to participate in and be encouraged in sport, music and other non academic activities. Over the three years our eldest has been there he has achieved grade five and grade four in two instruments through excellent teaching. Highly recommended as an all around school.

Firstly I attended Bootham Junior school, which I would say that I enjoyed and had a good start to my education and overall i was please that I went there. I then attended a state secondary school to gain a new experience in education and because I felt that paying for an education wasn't fair on my parents. I loved the time that I had at my secondary school, and the people that I met, whilst at this school I remained friends with a few people from Bootham Junior, but 5 years is a long time and we had all changed. For sixth form I felt that my best chance at getting the best results was to go back to Bootham, and let me inform you now, that was the worst descision I have ever made. My parents were able to financially support me, but now I realise that was wasted money. My friends had not just 'grown', they were completly different people, not very nice either, all of the students seemed to have an attitude to 'out-do' each other with what they wear or how many parties they go to. Bootham itself describes sixth form as a 'college', which is all so true by the lack of support that they give, you are pressured into getting the best results to make them look better, but you are expected to do most things yourself without help. You can get a much better quality of education (or the same) by going to a state sixth form, from other friends I believe that All Saints & Huntington are very good Fulford is very pressured and also a no go area and Joseph Rowntree has good facillities but that is about it. I feel that I would have had a better sixth form experience and education had i have gone to Huntington or All Saints, and they are free to attend, so I am not wasting their money. Please take my advice and avoid Bootham, particually if, like me, you have had a break from there during your education. Bootham knows how to put on a show for the inspectors and on taster days, but after experiencing sith form day in day out I know that it is all a big sham. Something else regarding friendship, during secondary school I would meet up with old friends, who were all nice on their own, but in their atmosphere (Bootham) with their friends, they don't want to leave the friends that they have made to go back to you. This is not stereotypical of some people either, it is what constantly happens at Bootham with other friendship groups. If you can't manage to find new clothes every day, then also be prepared to be disrespected. Sorry that this is a long review, but I want people to learn from my mistakes. My true friends were at my secondary school and now University. Basically you can get a much better FREE education within York.
